Meetings

Offsites, board meetings, training and workshops

Hourly meeting room and conference room rental, without the hotel. The usual option is a hotel function room with no windows, a catering minimum, a final headcount due three weeks out, and a sales call before anyone will tell you a price. This is the creative alternative.

Lots of windows and skylights overhead provide beautiful natural light. A permanent conference corner with a powered conference table seating eight. A large screen mobile television, a pull-down projection screen in the conference area for your own projector, a whiteboard, and a painted chalkboard wall set into the brick. Guest WIFI on a secured network; we give you the name and password. Restrooms on the same floor.

Events

Receptions, parties and celebrations

Open floor plan, old wood, exposed brick, and lots of natural light. Timber posts and a vaulted beamed ceiling do the decorating for you.

There is no kitchen, no bar and no event staff here. That is also why there is no catering minimum and no beverage package. Bring the caterer you want, bring what you want to drink, and create the space you envision for your event. Alcohol needs a one-day license or a licensed vendor, and events need a certificate of insurance naming us: both are covered on the pricing page. Amplified music must end by 10pm, city regulation.

Timber posts hold up a high, vaulted and beamed ceiling. The plank floor is the original, worn the way a century of work wears wood, and the brick has never been covered. Ductwork runs where it has always run.

The light is the reason people book it. Windows down three walls and a run of skylights over the middle, so it moves all day — hard and raking in the morning, long window-pane shadows the length of the floor by late afternoon, and the lit Mill Mountain Star in the south glass after dark.

Load-in is a 4,500 lb freight elevator with a lot right outside the door.

If you have ever been handed a $2,400 food-and-beverage minimum for a room you only wanted for an afternoon, this is the trade. You bring your own caterer and you set the room up yourself, and in exchange you pay for the room and nothing else.

The building

Built in 1912 for the Virginia Can Company.

Cans came off these floors for forty years: Virginia Can, then United States Can from 1927, then Continental Can, which kept the lines running until 1951. Kenrose Manufacturing turned the floors into a clothing factory in 1952. S. H. Heironimus, Roanoke’s own department store, bought the complex in 1963 and warehoused here into the early 2000s. Their painted sign is still on the wall, and the Continental Can ghost sign is still on the south parapet.

The building has been individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 22 February 2006, and is on the Virginia Landmarks Register. The ground floor is tenanted. The second floor is where the Star View Room is.

After dark the Mill Mountain Star sits framed in the south windows. That is where the room gets its name.
